Ines Ziyou Yin (殷子由 she/her) is a native Cantonese and Hakka born and raised in Guangdong, China.

She is a G.B.A.-based (the Greater Bay Area, China) design researcher, currently conducting her Ph.D. research at the School of Design, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (Hong Kong SAR, China), under the supervision of Prof. Kin Wai Michael SIU.

Yin has her bachelor's (First Class Honours) degree in Communication (Media, Arts, and Design) at Beijing Normal University-Hong Kong Baptist University United International College (UIC, currently re-named Beijing Normal-Hong Kong Baptist University) (Zhuhai, China) and MA (Distinction) in UX Design at the University of the Arts London (London, UK).

 

After completing her master's degree, she worked as an Assistant Instructor I of the Cinema and Television programme, Department of Film, Television and New Media at UIC. She co-taught Fundamentals of Communication with the chief lecturers and assisted in various courses related to film production, acting, and communication studies as listed:

Yin has been exploring critical and speculative approaches in co-design practices since her master's study. Her working experience also allowed her to learn from scholars in Films and Communication Studies and experts of production in these industries, with which she tries to integrate related approaches in design research for collaborative speculative storytelling.

Her research interests include:

  • Domains: Human communication, social connectedness, human relations, human-machine relations, cyborgs, physical-digital experiences/interactions, public experiences, social justice, sustainable futures, transformative design, inclusive design;

  • Methods: Research through Design/Making, Participatory Design Research (PDR), Co-Design, Speculative Design, Design Fiction, Critical Design, Role-Playing, Collective Storytelling, Directed Storytelling, Metaphor Probing, Human-AI Collaboration;

  • Research Paradigms: Inductive approach, qualitative research, mixed-method research, practice-led research, research-led practice.

 

In terms of ontological and epistemological exploration, Yin is quite into modern and post-modern philosophy, which has helped her view the world critically.

She read works by/about Arturo Escobar, Bruno Latour, Byung-Chul Han 한병철, Donna Haraway, Dunne and Raby, Erving Goffman, Gilles Deleuze, Jacques Derrida, Kees Dorst, Laura Forlano, Marc Hassenzahl, Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Michel Foucault, Rob Brooks, Sherry Turkle, Tim Ingold, and so one.
